About this Trip

The southern Mexican state of Oaxaca lies at the western edge of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrowest part of the North American continent. Two mountain ranges come together on this narrow neck of land, the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Sierra Madre Occidental. In between them lies the valley of Oaxaca, where the city of the same name is located at an elevation of 5000 feet. Within the political boundaries of the state you can experience rugged Pacific beaches, humid pine and oak forests, Mexico’s largest cloud forest, arid valleys and the tropical low lands of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 700 species of birds have been recorded within Oaxaca’s borders, including 40 Mexican endemics. As rich as it is in habitat and birds, Oaxaca is equally rich in cultural diversity. Twelve distinct indigenous groups inhabit the area around Oaxaca City and the city’s depth of history is evident on every corner and in the surrounding countryside. Although we will be concentrating on the birds of the state, we will certainly be stopping to experience and enjoy the wonders of this place rich in history and culture. This complete birding tour of Oaxaca offers diversity and variety, but at a reasonable pace. While many Oaxaca tours emphasize just the city and valley of Oaxaca, we will explore the humid cloud forest and tropical lowlands of the Gulf slope, the isthmus and the Pacific slope. However, to help lessen the chore of changing hotels, we have given ourselves multiple nights in each of the trip’s locations! Whether you are an experienced tropical birder looking to add some Mexican endemics to your life list or a beginner in search of a first taste of the tropics, our birding tour to Oaxaca has much to offer!
