About This Trip
Join us for a trip to our home town, where you'll get an insider's look at all that the beautiful town of Alamos has to offer. Alamos is known as the colonial jewel of Sonora and was founded in the late 1600s, after rich veins of silver were found in region. At one point, these silver mines of La Aduana were the most productive in the world and this great richness made Alamos the town that it is today. The elegant layout of the downtown and the fine examples of Spanish colonial architecture are evidence of the great significance that Alamos had for Spain. Nowadays, the historic center of town has been elevated to National Historic Monument status because of the architecture and also declared a 'Pueblo Magico' of Mexico, because of it's rich history, cultural significance and natural biodiversity. Starting in Tucson, we make the days drive to Alamos, stopping for our first of many delicious meals along the way. Once in Alamos, we'll settle into the comfortable adobe casitas of El Pedregal and a enjoy a delicious welcome dinner. While in Alamos, we'll shop the the local market and prepare a few meals, learning about local products and cuisine. We'll also explore the old mining town of La Aduana and visit the women's artisans cooperative which is full of one-of-a-kind crafts made from mostly recycled materials. Here in Aduana, we'll also tour the historic church and learn about the 'miracle cactus' and the patron saint, La Virgen de Balvanera. One day, we'll venture out to the small town of Sabinito Sur where we'll learn to make cheese, do some embroidery with the ladies, learn about their pottery making and enjoy a traditionally prepared meal. Back in Alamos, we'll take a morning to go on a Home and Garden Tour, the proceeds of which go to the Amigos de Educacion scholarship fund, as well as visit the great Museo Costumbrista. On another day, we'll make the rounds to visit local artisans of different kinds and get a tour of the different neighborhoods of Alamos, visiting sites of interest along the way. And, because this trip is over the Day of the Dead, we'll make the trip to the cemetery to join the festivities and offer flowers to some of our dearly departed friends. The scene at the local cemetery is one not to be missed! On our way back to Tucson, we'll spend the last night on the Sea of Cortez and enjoy a meal at the best restaurant in San Carlos.Accommodations
During the tour we will stay at our unique and beautiful El Pedregal Nature Lodge. The luxurious adobe casitas and inviting central lodge are set on 20 acres of intact tropical deciduous forest right at the edge of Alamos. El Pedregal is known for its fine hospitality and delicious food. It is a beautiful and relaxing place to spend our time in Alamos. Not only will we enjoy great meals at El Pedregal, but we'll learn how to prepare some of them! And we'll enjoy other great food at our favorite places in Alamos.
