About This Trip

Long recognized for its plethora of species, diversity and sheer numbers of birds, the area surrounding San Blas, in the Mexican state of Nayarit, is well known and a popular destination for birders. The area offers the opportunity to see more than 30 Mexican endemics, interesting tropical birds at their northern limit, as well as a large number of neo-tropical migrants at their wintering grounds. Much of San Blas’ enduring charm is due to the fact that it has never been developed for large-scale tourism, and lacks the big Mexican beach resort “feel” that is prevalent in many coastal towns. We think you will agree that San Blas is an interesting, comfortable and friendly small Mexican town.

After flying into Mazatlan, we travel 3 hours to the town of San Blas, which is our home for the duration of the trip. Bird watching in the San Blas area is easy on the birder as the best sites are very local and close in, requiring only short drives. We spend our days exploring the area and looking for birds on short, easy walks, taking boat trips, scoping mudflats and salt marshes and exploring mangrove forests, coffee plantations, palm and thorn forests and one day in the humid pine-oak.

The list of possible birds is long. Some of our goals will be Collared Forest-falcon, Lilac-crowned Parrot, Colima Pygmy Owl, Fan-tailed Warbler, Blue Mockingbird, Golden Vireo, Citroline Trogon, Orange-fronted Parakeet, White-throated Flycatcher, Black-vented Oriole, and Godman’s (Scrub) Euphonia. At higher elevation area, we’ll be looking for high elevation specialties like Gray-collared Becard, Crescent-chested Warbler, White-striped Woodcreeper, Black-headed Siskin, Gray-crowned Woodpecker and Spotted Wren. This area is also excellent for hummingbirds, including the endemic Bumblebee Hummingbird and the Mexican Woodnymph.

Accommodations

Our home during the trip is the family run Hotel Garza Canela. The warm hospitality of the Vasquez family, combined with comfortable rooms, a wonderful swimming pool and superb food prepared by a Cordon Bleu trained chef, make for an ideal stay. The hotel is a great place to spend a hot afternoon relaxing after a wonderful lunch, before the evenings birding. The Vasquez sisters do an amazing job of spoiling birders!

A trip to San Blas is an excellent introduction to the wonders of tropical birding and natural history.

This trip starts and ends in Mazatlan.
